Brits’ Top Five Worst Fears Revealed

The UK’s top five worst fears have been revealed, following a nationwide survey.

The data shows that heights (26%), the sea and sharks (22%), confined spaces (19%), falling (12%) and flying (3%), were ranked as the top five most common things that Brits fear.

Despite the intensity of these phobias, more than half of the nation (55%) say they wish they could tackle their biggest fears, according to the survey of 2,000 respondents carried about by the ultimate adventure centre – The Bear Grylls Adventure – in celebration of its fifth anniversary.

The study also revealed that a third of UK adults (33%) feel that they were more fearless when they were five years old compared to now.

The king of adventure himself – Bear Grylls – admits that he first discovered his adrenaline junkie side at that age and is now calling on adults and children alike to tackle the nation’s biggest fear for just £5 a ticket from September 30th to October 8th to mark the fifth anniversary of the opening of the adventure centre.

The £5 tickets will be available over both weekends for any visitors who want to tackle the staggering heights of the Europe’s tallest high ropes course or the site’s climbing walls, guests can also enjoy archery and axe throwing at the discounted cost.

Bear said:
“I first started to experience a love of adventure and adrenaline when I was around five years old when I, like most people, was at my most fearless.

“So, it seems fitting to mark the fifth anniversary of The Bear Grylls Adventure – where we’re all about overcoming your fears and embracing adrenaline – by helping more people tackle their worst fears and embrace the return to their youthful fearlessness.

“At the adventure centre there is a range of activities on offer that align with the UK’s top phobias. Each activity will test your mettle and allow you to walk away braver and accomplished in overcoming your fear.”

1. Heights

To tackle the age-old fear of heights, visitors will be able to take part in Europe’s tallest high ropes course, standing at a staggering 65ft tall. Participants will not only feel the rewards of getting over their fears, but they’ll also receive breath-taking views of the surrounding areas too.

2. The sea and sharks

Guests can submerge themselves in water to overcome their fear of the deep blue before coming face to fin with one of the ocean’s top predators in an unforgettable shark diving experience.

3. Confined spaces

The site has a variety of different themed escape rooms on offer, offering a fun and family-friendly way to tackle the phobia of locked, confined spaces. Stay calm, solve the riddles and thrill-seekers will be free before they know it.

4. Falling

What better way to overcome a fear of falling than to take part in one of the centre’s climb courses. Inspired by some of the most amazing peaks from around the world, there are over 20 routes for people to choose from and with a harness to catch the fall, you can push, pivot and pull your way to the summit without having to worry.

5. Flying

Nothing gets adrenaline pumping then a free fall flight, and guests can enjoy the fun and adventure of the site’s indoor skydive – iFLY – a wind tunnel where you can combat your fear of flying in the most adventurous and brave way.

The centre’s recent lowering of the age restriction means that mini adventurers as young as five can enjoy a number of exciting activities onsite too, including indoor skydiving, climbing and archery.

Lee Phillips, General Manager at The Bear Grylls Adventure, said:
“Since opening in 2018, we’ve welcomed a variety of thrill-seekers who are ready to tackle their fears and have an adrenaline-fuelled day out.

“We thought what better way to celebrate our fifth anniversary, than to invite Brits to tackle the nation’s biggest fear and other popular activities, for just £5 a ticket. We can’t wait to see how our guests get on!”
