Having A Whale Of A Time In Mexico

As winter draws ever closer in Europe, Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit is getting ready for its whale migrating season.

November is the time these ocean giants travel back from North America to the warm Pacific Ocean waters of the Riviera Nayarit and its surrounding area, for the winter months to feed, mate and give birth.

Whilst the whale watching season runs from mid-December until the end of March, the first sightings have already been reported this season and more whales are expected to arrive soon and stay until April.

Visitors can expect sightings of Humpback Whales, Orcas, Blue whales, Sperm whales and California Grey Whales, plus many species of dolphin.

There are countless locations to enjoy whale watching in Riviera Nayarit as the destination transforms into the perfect stage, from Nuevo Vallarta to Bucerias, Punta Mita, Sayulita, Guayabitos, and San Blas, all the way up the Pacific coast to playa El Novilllero.

Whale-watching tours in the region are led by expert guides who have the experience required to respect the humpback whales and allow them the space they need. Many Nayarit whale-watching companies also allocate a portion of the proceeds from their tours to future whale research and conservation. The tour companies in the area use small boats, since they have the lowest impact, enabling visitors to get close to the whales without disturbing them.
