Major Repairs To Make Your M60 Journeys Smoother And Safer

A project to carry out major repairs to the M60 road surface near Stockport will require two full weekend closures next month.

The clockwise carriageway will be closed between junctions 1 and 2 from 9pm on Friday 12 March until 5am on Monday 15 March, and again from 9pm on Friday 19 March until 5am on Monday 22 March.

A diversion will be in place along the A560 and drivers are also being asked to consider using the anticlockwise side of the M60 to reach their destination.

Highways England had originally planned to carry out the work, which starts on Wednesday, 10 March, during the summer and is bringing the scheme forward to take place during the current lockdown period when fewer vehicles are using the motorway.

Phil Deller, Highways England’s project manager, said:

“Anyone who travels along this stretch of the M60 will be aware of the issues with potholes forming regularly on the carriageway, and this scheme will provide smoother and safer journeys for drivers.

“We’ve considered several options on how to deliver the repairs and have decided to bring them forward to the current lockdown period to reduce the impact on drivers as much as possible.

“We urge people to stay at home unless their journeys are essential. Drivers who still need to travel should allow extra time and consider using alternative routes during the weekend and overnight closures."

As well as the weekend closures repairs to the clockwise carriageway between junctions 1 and 2 will take place overnight.

Contractors need to excavate 100-metre-long sections to remove damaged layers of concrete under the road surface, and install pre-fabricated steel to the foundations. New concrete will then be poured, and the carriageway will be resurfaced with a smoother and quieter road surface.

The repairs are subject to suitable weather conditions and a closure could also take place between 9pm on Friday 26 March to 5am on Monday 29 March if either of the first two weekend closures need to be postponed.

The scheme is due to be completed by the end of April and more details are available at www.highwaysengland.co.uk/m60-concrete
