Palma Bucks Trend With Increased Luxury Travel Proposition

Despite challenges brought about by the international pandemic, Mallorca’s capital city, Palma, continues to attract significant hotel investment with the conversion of four historic buildings in the Old Town into luxury boutique properties which will collectively accommodate 200 people.

Over the last decade, Palma’s authorities have invested significantly into the repositioning of the city to ensure a more long-term, sustainable and higher quality tourism proposition. At the same time, Palma has seen significant private sector investment in boutique and luxury properties.

Today, the Balearic Island capital has one of the highest percentages of four and five-star properties in the whole of Spain, accounting for 90% of the total hotel inventory.

In early 2021, Palma will welcome the launch of Nivia Hotel Boutique located on the elegant Passeig de Born, part of an expansion scheme by Garden Hotels Group. This boutique property situated in one of Palma’s most iconic areas will boast 24 rooms and a rooftop overlooking Palma’s dramatic Gothic cathedral.
During the 1950’s, the building was the headquarters of Spain’s national airline, Iberia, and the interiors will transport visitors to this era with a mid-century style.

The president of Palma and Cala Major’s Hotel Association, Javier Vich, celebrates the continued investment in the city especially given the current climate saying that “it shows confidence in the destination in a post-COVID era.”

Managing Director of Palma Tourist Board, Pedro Homar, predicts that the 2021 season will welcome more high-spend visitors to the city, particularly those seeking exclusivity and privacy.

He said:”We welcome all kinds of travellers to Palma and we can certainly cater to suit a range of budgets, but booking data certainly indicates an appetite for luxury travel.”

Backing up this trend, recommendation platform, www.twisper.com, a rapidly-growing social app for users to share and discover positive-only recommendations of restaurants, hotels and bars, has revealed that its most-favourited hotel and restaurant choices in Palma all fall into the luxury category.

The Nakar Hotel, Purohotel Boutique and Hotel Convent de la Missio are identified as the top three properties whilst the top restaurant recommendations are Gaudeix, Patron Lunares and Aromata.
