Federico Colli continues his compelling Mozart journey with this second volume of solo piano works, demonstrating both technical mastery and interpretative boldness. Opening with the rare
B minor Adagio K.540 from 1788, Colli's characteristic colouring feels somewhat overstated for this austere sonata-form meditation. However, his approach proves triumphant in the variation sets that follow.
The Twelve Variations on 'Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman' (better known as Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star) positively sparkle under Colli's fingers. His virtuosic treatment allows the decorative elements to punch through with tremendous panache while maintaining the work's playful spirit. Similarly impressive is his handling of the variations on Gluck's popular air, where his nuanced phrasing brings fresh insights to familiar material.
The program concludes with Mozart's beloved
A major sonata, K.331, whose unconventional structure—opening with variations rather than sonata form—suits Colli's adventurous temperament perfectly. The famous 'Alla turca' finale, taken at quite a lick, showcases his technical brilliance without sacrificing musical integrity.
Throughout, Colli's personality shines—sometimes to excess, but more often revealing hidden depths in these well-known works. His sensitive lyricism balances the dazzling passages beautifully. Michael O'Loghlin provides perceptive programme notes and also included is a fascinating letter from Colli detailing his research process, whilst Chandos provides their customarily superb engineering. This is Mozart through a distinctly individual lens—thoroughly engaging and never dull.
