You will have been missing out if you haven’t heard of Sunshine Saturday.

It is normally the first full weekend of January when travel agents and tour operators are usually inundated with holiday bookings.

It is something which seems to have been invented by the travel industry as being the day that thousands of people book their summer holidays. The cold weather seems to have set in along with the winter or January blues after the post-festive season of Christmas.

The travel companies believe that a holiday is something families will be prioritising despite the cost of living crisis.

Most people are back at work and more than a million people are expected to go online or visit their high street travel agents to book their summer getaways.

ATOL’s top tips to protect your 2024 holiday bookings:

Consider a package trip
Research your travel company to check for holiday fraud
Use a credit card to book
Always book travel insurance
Keep essential documents safe in one place
Keep updated with latest travel requirements

This year according to statistics more people will probably be booking package holidays making sure that their holiday is ATOL protected. It is also a good idea to check that the package holiday company is a member of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) or another respected industry body.

The travel industry is hoping for a bumper day this Saturday as according to research three in five people are planning to go abroad this year (56%) and just over half (51%) plan to go abroad more than once in 2024.

Tips for securing your dream break according to ABTA:

To make your budget go further book with a travel agent or tour operator.
Book a package holiday.
Have an open mind regarding new destinations.
Consider going all-inclusive.
