In celebration of National Drink Wine Day, Dr Ferakh Hamid from Aesthetique Dental Care provides top tips and prevention measures to help you avoid getting ‘wine teeth’.

Wine Stains

The pigments, tannins, and acidity in red wine collectively pose a triple threat to your teeth’s whiteness. These components stick to enamel, making it porous and more susceptible to stains.

Wine Consumption

The order of wine consumption also has an impact. Opting for white wine before red wine intensifies staining due to increased acidity. Being mindful of wine choices can significantly influence tooth discoloration.

Teeth Brushing

Timing is important - brushing 30 minutes before enjoying red wine creates a protective barrier. However, avoid brushing immediately afterward, as toothpaste can enhance the wine’s impact. Strategic brushing promotes effective stain prevention.

Tooth brushing technique matters - use a soft toothbrush and make sure you cover the entire tooth surface. Regular dental cleanings complement this routine by removing plaque, a key contributor to stains and cavities.

Role of Saliva

Swishing with water after indulging in red wine is a simple yet effective practice. This not only reduces the wine's acidity but also stimulates saliva flow. Saliva plays a critical role in neutralising harmful acids and maintaining a healthy oral pH.

Eating Food

Chewing food acts as a natural defence against wine stains. Cheese, in particular, serves as an ideal companion to wine, stimulating saliva production and mitigating the acidity impact. Thoughtful food choices can be a proactive strategy against teeth discoloration.

Safe Whitening Practices

Not all whitening toothpaste is created equal. Avoid products containing charcoal or baking soda, as they may compromise enamel. Opt for toothpaste with natural whitening agents, such as organic coconut oil or activated charcoal, for a safe and effective approach to brightening your smile.

Evening Dental Care Routine

Nighttime care is essential. Using a water flosser or dental floss before bed removes particles lodged between teeth, preventing potential stains. Consistent evening dental care contributes to the overall health and appearance of your teeth.
