Kynren’s Stunt Women Prepare For Their Final Daring Performances

Two female stunt performers are getting ready to perform one of Kynren’s most daring stunts in the final three shows for the 2025 season.

Rebecca Fielding, 40, and Stephanie Roundsmith, 41, are both volunteer horsewomen and performers in the blockbuster production. They join forces every Saturday evening to execute the formidable ‘Dragged Roman’ stunt, where Stephanie is pulled at speed on the ground across the seven-and-a-half-acre stage by a galloping horse ridden by Rebecca, as the impressive duo recreate a dramatic moment from Roman Britain.

Stephanie said: “This is without a doubt my favourite scene! It's such a unique and different stunt, but after performing this for many years I find it quite easy now and feel as though I've really mastered the technique. I also try to not look at the tribune (this is Kynren's seating area for audiences up to 8,000 people) to hide my face as most people presume I'm a man and I like to keep that bit of ambiguity alive!

“I am really proud to be doing the roles that I do, as are the other women in Kynren, and that was one of the main reasons I wanted to do the drag stunt – to demonstrate that this isn’t something that can only be completed by men. It was so much fun learning this tricky performance, but the feeling of accomplishment and pride is something I'll never forget.”

Training for this stunt was a gradual process for Stephanie and Rebecca. The scene was broken down into different phases and they meticulously learned each one with extreme precision and accuracy. Slowly, they then began to piece the different sections together, gradually gaining speed to get Stephanie to a point where she felt safe and confident in the stunt.

Rebecca added: “Riding my horse Amarata, I drag the captured Roman in the live action night show. I have been performing this part of the show since it was introduced in 2018 and the stunt is a real crowd pleaser – we can hear the cheers as we canter across the stage. You can tell that Amarata loves this scene as he struggles to contain his enthusiasm every single show.”

Stephanie, who has been volunteering in Kynren since 2017, and Rebecca, who has taken part since the show’s very first season, are also medieval jousters in the award-winning spectacular and ride in full costume during Kynren’s glittering Jubilee procession, proudly carrying a flag while their horses canter in formation.

Stephanie added: “I feel incredible lucky to have such amazing roles in the production, which include some dramatic stunts and specific techniques. For the jousting and Jubilee scenes, I always ride the same horse, Ufano, who is quite the character, but we've built such a wonderful relationship together and he really trusts me. In fact, I'm now Ufano's regular rider, which is a privilege.

“I'm a very proud Northerner and enjoy working with local people. It's so fantastic to be involved in something right on our doorstep that supports the area and brings in more visitors to the region.”

Rebecca and Stephanie are part of the 1,000-strong volunteer cast and crew who take part in Kynren, which features epic battles, galloping horses, mass choreography, magnificent sets and stunning pyrotechnics as it brings 2,000 years of history to breathtaking life every Saturday night in summer.

Performances run until 13th September, starting at sunset and ending under the stars.

Tickets start from £30 for adults and £20 for under-18s. Children aged three and under go free when seated on an adult’s knee.
