Morecambe Girls Football Club will continue its bid to bring more women into the sport thanks to the backing of Lancashire housebuilder Barratt Homes.
Alongside their sponsorship of the club, Barratt Homes has also helped to provide brand-new kits for the under-9s ahead of their upcoming season.
On their sponsorship of the club, the Managing Director at Barratt Homes Manchester, Rhys Nicholson said: “We are incredibly proud to support Morecambe Girls FC. Learning about the legacy of the club and what it means to the local community has been fantastic, and we hope it continues to flourish in the future.”
25 years ago Sophie Fish founded Morecambe FC Women (then named Lancaster and Morecambe Ladies FC) to create a space that meant women and girls could play football.
The team quickly became ‘a symbol for the fight for recognition and structure for women’s football', and in 2018 Fish laid the groundwork for what would become Morecambe Girls FC.
On the formation and development of Morecambe’s women's and girls' teams, Coach at Morecambe Girls FC Paul Eden said: “While enthusiasm was high, it wasn’t an ideal setup for development. Different ages meant different physical levels, different learning needs, and different stages of understanding the game. Rather than seeing this as a barrier, it became motivation to grow.
“The club continues to grow today with new players joining regularly and new opportunities emerging. Girls’ football is on the rise across the country, and Morecambe is playing its part in that movement.”
The ‘modest’ and sometimes ‘challenging’ early days of the girls' setup saw ‘three-or-four-year age gaps’ between the ‘handful of players’ that attended the sessions.
In 2026, the club now gives footballing opportunities to over 200 girls and 50 women across more than 10 teams, continuing their legacy as ‘the longest-standing girls-only football sessions in the area’.
On the legacy of Morecambe for the women’s game, a coach at Morecambe Girls FC Paul Eden, said: “Today, Morecambe Girls FC boasts over 200 girls and 50 women, making it one of the most vibrant and successful grassroots setups in the region. The club now fields teams across nearly every age group, from under-7s right through to under-18s, as well as two open-age women’s teams.”
“We want to send a big thank you to Barratt Homes for supporting us and helping to continue the club’s legacy, giving us the power to introduce more women and girls to the sport.”
