What if one story could change how you see the world?

On 13th September, audiences everywhere are invited to witness something extraordinary: The Goddess and the Shadow, streamed live from the sacred limestone caves of Kilifi, Kenya. This immersive performance combines music, myth, and ritual in the very place these stories were born, bringing ancient Mijikenda wisdom directly into your living room.

Created in collaboration with the British Council and Settle Stories, a small but ambitious arts charity based in the Yorkshire Dales, this event marks a rare cultural moment. For the Kenyan performers, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to share their ancestral stories with a global audience. For viewers, it’s a chance to experience living history, carried through generations, at the exact site where these tales have always been told.

Audiences will journey through the creation story of the nine Mijikenda tribes, from darkness into light, guided by Giriama elders, dancers, and the renowned musicians of Ghetto Classics. You’ll witness Kadzo, a woman infused with the power of the sea goddess, confront a shadow that threatens her land and community. This is not theatre as you know it, it is a call to remember who we are when we stand together.

“This is a performance that will stay with people forever,” says Settle Stories Artistic Director/CEO Sita Brand. “It’s not just about entertainment. It’s about connection to the earth, to each other, and to cultures that have vital wisdom to share at this moment in time.”
