Yorkshire squash star Sam Todd will return to action at the end of the month as London prepares to host one of the most esteemed events on the PSA Squash Tour calendar, the Optasia Championships.
The Championships will be held at the Wimbledon Club between 24 and 29th March and will see 12 of the men’s top 20 compete across 5 rounds to be crowned the 2026 champion.
On how his preparations have been going ahead of his home competition, Todd said: "I'm feeling good and feeling confident. Training has been going well, and the body is feeling good. I'm just excited to get out there and showcase my squash on these big stages now.”
Todd’s draw for the Optasia Championships will see him face Kareem El Torkey, who is ranked 22nd in the PSA Men’s World Ranking, in his first-round match, which will take place on the opening day of the competition.
The winner of that match will then face world number 1 Mostafa Asal and reigning Optasia Men’s Champion on the 26th March in a bid to reach the quarterfinals, which will be contested the next day.
On his draw for the championships, Todd said: "I'm happy with my draw; they're all tough opponents no matter who I get in the first round, so I just have to focus on one match at a time and put what I’ve been working on in training into my match, and of course if I get the win, it will be great to get on court with the world number 1 in the next round.”
The former British Junior Open champion will make his long-awaited return to action in his home country, as over the past six months he has competed mainly in North America.
Ahead of his return to London, Todd currently sits 47th in the PSA World Rankings, with the Yorkshireman having accumulated 210 points from his past 15 tours.
On his return to action in London, Todd said: "It feels great to be playing in my home country and have a home crowd. With me being away a lot recently with travelling to all these different places, it’s nice to have one close to home so some of my family and friends can come and support.”
Todd had a successful end to his 2025 season, as he reached the final in his final two tournaments of the year, which both took place at the end of November.
On 23rd November 2025, he competed in the final of the CDMX Open Tekae Faltami before he played world no. 31 Nicolas Muller in the White Oaks Cup final.
On his successes at the end of 2025, Todd said, "At the end of 2025, I was in good form, reaching my highest ranking, and now I can start to get into some of the bigger events on the calendar where I’m playing some of the top boys, which is all good experience for what I need to keep improving my level of squash and get my ranking higher for this year in 2026.”
Todd returned to action this January of this year as he reached the second round of the Motor City Open in the USA in his first PSA Tour event of 2026.
He has also featured in two more events in the USA this year, as he played in both the Squash on Fire Open and the Texas Open last month.
On his plans for the rest of the year, Todd said: "For the next few events, I hope to get a few wins against some of the top players, as I’ve been close already. Getting more matches at this higher level is great experience for me, and I am learning what I need to do to keep improving, so it will come.”
Todd’s Optasia Championship first-round match against El Torkey will take place at 18:15pm on 24th March at the Wimbledon Club’s Glass Court.
