What a treat! Alpesh Chauhan and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra have delivered something special with this third volume of their Tchaikovsky series. It's a brilliantly crafted collection that showcases the Russian master at his finest.
The standout piece is Tchaikovsky's
Orchestral Suite No 2, a real gem that shows the composer at his most creative. Freed from the formal constraints of symphony writing, Tchaikovsky crafts five movements that take you on a wonderful musical journey. The opening strings are absolutely beautiful—lush and inviting, setting the tone for the exquisite playing throughout.
The Scherzo humoristique is particularly delightful, with accordions adding wonderful character and colour to the orchestra. Rêves d'enfant is performed with such gentle beauty that the warmth simply flows through every note.
The excerpts from
Eugene Onegin are expertly chosen and performed. The
Entr'acte and Waltz beautifully captures a countryside celebration, whilst the 'Polonaise' transports listeners to an elegant St Petersburg ballroom. Top-notch stuff!
The Marche slave is powerfully performed—remarkable to think Tchaikovsky wrote this stirring piece in just five days for a fundraising concert supporting Montenegro and Serbia.
Classical music enthusiasts will particularly appreciate the rarities included.
Dance of the Histrions from
The Enchantress is a lovely discovery from a rarely performed opera, while
The Storm Overture showcases the young composer's developing talents.
This is a genuinely rewarding album, brimming with superb orchestral performances and rich musical textures. The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra delivers outstanding playing throughout, whilst Chauhan's masterful conducting draws out the finest qualities in each work.
It's worth adding to your collection! Perfect for both classical newcomers and seasoned listeners alike.
